Workshop:

Old Age as a Pilgrimage

For many of us it is a solitary journey into ageing. Whether we are in a relationship, live in our own home, in retirement or care communities, once the structure of work, family, partnership, has gone we have to find our own way.

How are we going to make the most of this time of our life?

What will guide us, how will we continue to develop as people over the years ahead? I’ve thought about this a lot as I age, and as I live with people who are ageing.

Over time I noticed that those of us with some sense of inner development, personal growth, some way of making sense of the world that included a spiritual purpose for our existence seemed to have useful resources to bring to the experience, whatever was happening. This led me to think, if life was a pilgrimage, a journey of spiritual or inner growth, then old age is a vital part of that pilgrimage.

Traditionally it is undertaken on foot as a way of being grounded in the real, the body, the present.

In this workshop we meet, explore our reasons for making a pilgrimage, clarify the inner work we want to do, and begin the journey. Along the way we share our experiences, our insights, our learning. At the end we clarify what we will bring into our life going forward.
